Woodfinishes

ESP Marketing have many years practical experience in supplying, using and demonstrating the
products that they supply.
We are sell products which we believe are a very good industrial standard and have added value.
We are able to train your operatives in their use on your premises and to help gain the most from
their use. Any products we supply would be backed up by us ensuring that the product would
meet the specification and process requirements.
However, all products we supply, are done so on the understanding that all necessary tests and
checks are made to ensure the optimum performance can be achieved.
Specific training would be done if requested for an agreed fee prior to the training date using your
facilities.
The product range is covered in the following outline:-

ABRASIVES & PROFILE SANDING
COATED ABRASIVES
Coated Abrasives is a very diverse range of products of grit bonded to paper, cloth, film, fibre and
combination paper which is converted into usable form such as sheets, rolls, discs, belts and
spindle mounted products. These products are attached in various ways and are used by hand,
air and electric hand tools, stationary machines and conveyorised systems and are used
to achieve an end result as required to every type of natural and man made substrate in all
shapes and sizes.

REINFORCED ABRASIVES
Constructed from layers of mesh impregnated with resin and grit and formed in press moulds and
cure by heat. Used to cut and grind metal and stone based products. Applied by hand held
angle grinders, petrol driven saws and table mounted machines. Rapid cutting and fast stock
removal when grinding.

PROFILE SANDING PRODUCTS
The selection of materials available for this purpose divides into three main groups:-
1) Strips, Discs and Stars for Hand Sanding and Small Hand Tools
2) Heads and Wheels for Edge Sanding
3) Nylon Impregnated Bristle Brushes, Tampico Brushes and Stars for Throughfeed Machines
Profiles, Moulding, Shapes, Turnings, Fielded Panels, Carvings etc are mainly made from wood or
wood composition. Depending on the quality, quantity and end value determines the amount of
attention given to finish any article. Choosing the best method to achieve the end result required,
has to be carefully considered, especially when capital equipment may be an option. As yet
there is no machine that can cope with all the problems that are set by shaped work.

PVA ADHESIVES
PVA to EN204 D2 Assembly, Reactive Adhesives non Water Resistant - Interior Use

Any PVA adhesive which is non crosslinking can only achieve EN204 D2 test spec (European
Standard). HB Fuller have a good range of PVA adhesives to this spec.which cover many
applications:-
1) General Assembly
2) HP Laminating
3) High Bond Strength/Creep Resistance for chair making, difficult timbers etc.
4) Rapid Set for use with Lamello Biscuits and dowel cabinet construction
5) Heat Reactive for Edgebanding

PVA to EN204 D3 Assembly, Water Resistant, R/F Crosslinking PVA

Any PVA adhesive which is crosslinks when cured achieves EN204 D3 water resistance. It has
resistance to moisture and has higher heat resistance than any D2 product but can only be
considered waterproof when mixed with an activator. (NB addition of activator does not make the
joint stronger it only increases the moisture resistance to meet EN204 D4)
Water resistant PVA's are used in the following areas:-
1) Assembly Hardwood furniture
2) HP Laminating
3) Core Stock manufacture
4) Rapid Set with radio frequency
5) Heat Reactive for Edgebanding
6) General Joinery under painted frames. Activate to achieve waterproof status

PVA to EN204 D4 Waterproof to full water immersion. High service cycle for guarantee projects.

This group of materials achieves waterproof standard as required by EN204 D4 and sets harder
glue lines. Pot life does vary from product to product (4 Hours To 6 Days)
The adhesives are able to cope with very difficult gluing problems and mainly used for exterior
applications:-
1) Garden Furniture Assembly
2) Hardwood doors & windows
3) Laminated wooden frames
4) Concrete shuttering on site build
5) Radio frequency

PVA EVA Copolymer High Heat Resistance

This material is able to stick one absorbent surface to one non absorbent surface and can cope
with a wide variety of substrates such as metal, cementitious board etc, It also has the capacity
to offer comparable Fire Check Resistance to Rescorcinol.

EDGEBANDING HOTMELTS

HB Fuller have a comprehensive range of hotmelt adhesives in clear, natural, black and white.
The main differences in materials are in low temperature application for small glue apply machines
which are now very popular and faster throughfeed machines for volume production. The hot melt
glues are formulated to give trouble free running with regard to panel transfer and charring.
PU hotmelt is available for fire resistant and waterproof application

POLYURETHANES
Polyurethane adhesives are very useful in many areas because of their capacity to bond to many
different products such as metals, paints, HPL, Rubber, GRP, Cementitious board, Wood,
Composite materials etc. The only caution for use with product is its reactivity with moisture. It
is multi purpose and the following are a few suggestions:-
1) Small lacquered component assembly
2) Bonding HPL directly to Melamine faced board
3) Waterproofing cutouts for inset sinks
4) Bonding metal faces to security doors
5) Assembly of prefinished joinery components for conservatories, doors and windows
6) Bonding metal strengthening struts into structural panels
7) Core stock compositition of reclaimed timber irrespective of moisture content

NEOPRENE & RUBBER BASED ADHESIVES

Rakoll Neoprene/Rubber Contact

This class of product is used mainly to make panels bonding a core to a laminate. Aerosol types
are also used to fix carpets and tiles. The material is usually applied to both surfaces by brush,
scraper or spray, allowed to air dry and bonded together using enough pressure to coalease the
surfaces together. Care should be taken that all substrates are resistant to the active solvent
present which allow the material to be applied.
The main applications are in the following areas:-
1) Laminating flat board applied by scraper, brush, conventional cold or hot spray depending on
job size
2) Application to vertical surfaces using thixotropic neoprene and aerosol
3) Postforming
4) Manufacture of panels to BS476 pt 6 & 7 class 0 & 1
5) Foam Bonding
6) Carpet fixing

RAKOLL UREA & PHENOLIC RESIN PRODUCTS

HB Fuller have a European agreement to supply BIP products which is a large and diverse
product range in powder and liquid resins.

EDGEBANDING
Section Ref:- Edgebanding :- Melamine, PVC and Woodcoil

Melamine
ESP Marketing have supplied Bausch edging for many years because of its very good range of
textured finishes in plain colours woodgrain colours and superior finishing quality which suit the
boards manufactured by Egger, Hornitex, Kronospan, Sonae etc.
Most colours are available from stock.
PVC
ESP Marketing have supplied Proadec calendered 0.4mm for several years to selected
customers. 1mm, 2mm & 3mmThicker PVC has been available in minimum amounts of 1000
metres per order in extruded material only for plain colours and woodgrains. For larger quantities
2mm and 3mm calendered material is now available and the woodgrain or any mixed colour is
printed onto the PVC surface.
Woodcoil
Woodcoil is made to a very high specification. The veneer is sanded in coil lengths which are
randomly finger jointed and fleeced backed. The material can be supplied to width for hotglue
application or if necessary coated with PvaC for reactive edgebanding or Pre-Hot Melt Glued.
Now available in 3.2mm thick coils to similar specification. The choice of timber is to the
customer requirements.

WOODFINISHES
Ref:- Granyte Woodworking Lacquers, Granyte Stains & Fillers, Shellacs, Waxes & Ancillary
Products.

Granyte EPA Compliant Systems
Since 1st April 1993 restrictions have been in force to limit the amount of solvents emissions
(VOC's) permitted into the atmosphere without a licence to 5 tonnes per annum. Many producers
who have limited capitol expenditure have found this a difficult target to meet. The advent of
waterstains, waterbased lacquers and water based waxes has allowed some manufacturers to
achieve full compliance. However, water does require equitable temperature to give a good
performance and in some cases the finish criteria required is too demanding for water based
systems to achieve a saleable result.
To help overcome the problem, mixed systems were devised. Using a permitted formula, interim
compliant systems allowed manufacturers to meet the regulatory requirement. High Solids Acid
Catalysed Lacquers and Acid Catalysed Fast Dry Lacquers which met standard test methods
such as BS6250 for wear and tear tests were introduced.

Granyte Standard Range
Nitrocellulose, Precatalysed and Polyurethane lacquers are still widely used by the smaller user
where practical considerations are a necessary requirement of the product which allows the user
to produce saleable products. (Polyurethane must be used with air fed masks) Solvent based
stains and Nitrofillas are also used to meet the product requirement.
Flooring Lacquers
ESP Marketing is able to offer three distinct finishes which are available in satin and gloss
finishes.
1) Acid Catalysed Activated Lacquer in Satin and Gloss apply Brush or Roller
2) Waterborne Acrylic Lacquer in Satin and Gloss apply Brush or Roller
3) Single Part Moisture Curing Polyurethane Gloss (add 7% Additive for Final Coat Satin Finish)
Apply Brush Also Excellent Bartop lacquer superior scuff, alcohol and water resistance

Joinery Products

ESP Marketing has a range of Waterbased Joinery Stains and finishes tested and approved to
BS5082. The materials are for highbuild airless application and conventional spray and give the
necessary life expectancy requirements and finish look required by topclass joinery products.
The product range also has the Dulux approval rating for overcoating when required with their
natural wood finishes.
Shellacs, Waxes and Ancillary Products
Shellac based products are still the basic material used in the antique repair trade. Here
perceived value is important and although 'new' reproduction furniture is finished with the standard
range products, originals have to be done using french polish methods.
Waxes
Have a specific use with reproduction furniture to give an old look and feel. Where possible avoid
the use of any surface application as most modern finishes are designed to stand up on their
own. Where wax is used as a cheap finishing method over water based stains or solvent based
stains is on pine furniture. Water based waxes are now available which are able to colour abd
finish in two coats applied by brush or spray.
Ancillary Products
Spray Guns, Spray Booth Paper Filters, Wire Wool, Nitromors Stripper, Rags and Wipers,
Brushes, Wax Sticks and Crayons, Dewaxing Solutions, Florite, Chamois Leather, Wadding,
PVC - Latex - Nitrile Gloves Face Masks etc
