Grit Impreg. & Interleaved Flap Wheels [Item Image]
Easy to use Profiling wheels for single
spindle and throughfeed machines

GRIT WHEELS & INTERLEAVED FLAP BRUSHES
Grit Impregnated Wheels & Interleaved Flap Brushes require a method to shape them to the
product and a compensation device to maintain the wheel face contact as they wear during the
sanding process . The wear compensation can be controlled by free hand application or by
incremental adjustment. This compensates for wheel wear by a timing or metering device.

NB These wheels only level small cutter pitch marks and remove loose grain.
Ist head against and 2nd head with the feed
Unnecessary pressure reduces the life of a wheel and also risks burning the product.

METHOD FOR SHAPING WHEELS
Produce a metre length of MDF shaped to the profile.
Fit the wheel to a vertical spindle on a 1 - 2HP motor mounted under a table.
Force the moulding manually, up to 5 times at 2-3" intervals into the face of the wheel, gradually
obtaining the required shape.
An alternative method is for the wheels to be fitted on to the machine and for the moulding to be
inched forward at 2-3" intervals. Each time the wheel is forced into the moulding basically
mimicking the method done by hand.
Flap brushes are shaped using conformable abrasive shaping tape fitted along the profile and
passing this across the face of the wheel.

SELECTING THE PRODUCT
Moulding and profiled edges are in general produced in MDF, Hardwood and Softwood. All three
materials have a basic finishing requirement which is to be an acceptable surface on which to
apply a finish to an agreed standard and at a price which the product can bear. When 1000 plus
metres are produced in regular to picture frame finish then this method is
economic. (See also Sanding Stars)

SUBSTRATES
MDF is abrasive material which is very hard on cutters tending to produce very fluffy surfaces
after machining (relative to timber). The wheel used needs to be hard and dense and the grit
coarse enough to combat MDF's abrasive nature to give good service life.
Hardwood & Softwood require a relatively soft density to allow the wheel surface to maintain
its cut without clogging.
The wheel also must cut the summer and winter growths evenly.
Lacquers Depend on the type of finish and surface quality produced by number of coats.
Plastics Fine grit to rejuvenate colour White Flap brush to buff up (Finer Intermediate grits
give higher sheen)
